While Saul was in fact the first King of Israel, God had anointed David and chose him to follow Saul as king of Israel because he was a true leader. â€Å"David was a fighter, courageous and skillful in battle (Clowney 2013, p149). Through grace and honor for the Lord, David would lead Israel with a spirit of obedience and trust, unlike Saul. Saul’s weakness was he repeatedly ignored God’s direction and allowed his reckless emotions to drive him away from God’s plan. â€Å"Meanwhile, God withdrew his Spirit from Saul; the king no longer had God’s enabling power to lead Israel† (Arnold Beyer, 2105, p.176).
